echochrome team working on new puzzler, not sequel

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 10:07 pm

Filed under:

When echochrome debuted earlier this year, it was praised for its innovative use of perspective. Players had to manipulate their perspective to guide the on-screen avatar to various echoes. The Escher-inspired game quickly became a fan-favorite hit. However, don’t expect a sequel to this celebrated game. Producer Tatsuya Suzuki and Kyushu University’s Jun Fujiki from Japan Studios told the Develop audience “we’re not doing a sequel - we’re not doing echochrome 2“.

Instead, Fujiki is working with Japan Studio on an entirely different game that uses yet another method of “trick imagery.” What does that mean? We’re not entirely certain, but considering the incredible fascination we have with echocrhome, we can’t wait to see what surprises they’ll have in store for us.

[Thanks, Kyle P.!]

DLC fight!!! Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star expand

Thursday 31 July 2008 @ 9:07 pm

This week, Monster Hunter faces some competition. One of the big selling points of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G was its free DLC, available weekly for eager fans. Just days after its launch in Japan, Sega is also making free Phantasy Star Portable DLC available. The first thing you’re going to kill? A very Monster Hunter-dragon. Do you smell the competition in the air?

While both of these PSP RPGs go head-to-head in Japan with tons of features for fans, we’re left here on this side of the Pacific, scratching our heads. Why don’t we get this cool stuff too?

New skillz fo’ Kingdom Hearts’ Terra

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 11:07 pm

Filed under:

Japanese publication Shonen Jump is providing us with another small update on the Kingdom Hearts prequel Birth by Sleep. A new special skill for Terra (not to be confused with Final Fantasy VI’s Terra, whose name is Tina in the original Japanese version) named Shock Lock System is shown, along with a screenshot of Ven. PSPHyper has the entire scan for you right here.

Nomura has commented before that the DS Kingdom Hearts title 358/2 Days will likely debut before Birth by Sleep. Since the scan shows 358/2 Days coming out in 2008, we can safely assume Birth by Sleep won’t be arriving until 2009.

Monster Hunter makes Capcom filthy rich in first quarter

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 10:07 pm

It’s no surprise that Monster Hunter is a hit in Japan, and it shouldn’t come as a sucker punch to know that the title has made a pretty penny for Capcom. In fact, Capcom is gloating; the company has posted first quarter financial results (April 1 to June 30) which shows off a 60.1 percent profit increase of ¥4.02 billion ($37.2m). No doubt, this huge gain in cash is due to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G which released March 27.

In this short time frame, the game has sold over 2.4 million copies in Japan — the first PSP game to break the two million mark. Sales during the period went up 14.5 percent from the previous year raking in a total of ¥16.35 billion ($151m). Capcom notes that software sales other than Portable 2nd G were “mainly small-scale titles including spin-off software and repeated sales of existing products.”

So Capcom, when can we expect the next Monster Hunter PSP game? It’s obviously successful and needs some more money milking. Better yet, when is North America going to get in on the party with 2nd G?

Dissidia gets a little more ‘cloudy,’ also stinks like an onion

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 3:07 pm

Filed under:

After reading that tricky tricky headline, you might be thinking to yourself: “ZOMG, it’s Cloud! It’s Cloud! It’s Cloud! It’s Cloud” Then proceed to run around the room overjoyed, plotting out your latest FFVII Yaoi fanfics. As much as we would enjoy allowing you such revelry, we unfortunately will have to break your heart, tear it in two, and then cast Ultima on it. You see, as the picture above suggests, the “cloudy” reference refers to The Cloud of Darkness, the final boss of Final Fantasy III and not our self-loathing, blond hero.

Lady Cloud of Darkness is a great choice over Xande (another FFIII final boss) as there is a serious need of more femininity injected in the sausagefest known as Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Hopefully, when FFVI gets added, we’ll be seeing Terra with complementary morph skills. Anyway, aside from Cloud of Darkness, a generic Onion Knight will be representing FFIII’s heroes. While none of the four Onion Kids are specifically mentioned, the character design, however, looks very similar to the DS remake’s Ingus. Now all that’s left is to see who’s coming from FFs IV, V, and VI.

Screw gravity! Watch the No Gravity trailer

Wednesday 30 July 2008 @ 4:07 am

What’s better than pictures? How about a moving picture? The first official trailer for the upcoming PSN download No Gravity has appeared on the web, and it confirms what we’ve seen from the stills: it’s pretty. Right now, it’s only confirmed for a European PSN release in August, but seeing the RP logo from the ESRB has us confident that this will hit the States not too far off in the future.
